Sunbathing is not harmful, but during pregnancy, it could be. It is not dangerous because we get Vitamin D from the sunlight, but the risks of too much exposure is the problem.

Some risks of sunbathing during pregnancy

Aside from the risks of sunbathing such as skin cancer and sunburn, there are other risks during pregnancy.

A pregnant woman’s temperature can increase when she is exposed to the sun. This can cause dehydration and preterm labor. It also increases the fetus’s temperature and can cause brain damage.

Also, estrogen and other hormones increase chloasma risk when the expectant mother is exposed to the UV rays of the sun. These dark spots may not disappear after pregnancy.

The last risk is sunburn, which increases the risk of developing melanoma.

Should you use artificial tanning methods?

Although tanning beds reduce the risk of overexposure, it could still cause skin problems and other disorders. The UV rays increase the aging rate of the skin, and this also increases skin cancer risks.

Precautions to take while going out:

  • Don’t go out during midday
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes on your body
  • Use sunglasses and large hats to cover your face
  • Only use pregnancy approved sunscreens.
  • Talk to your doctor about the possibility of supplementing Vitamin D.

Finding the right healthcare provider

You need to find a good healthcare provider that align with your choice. It is better to pick a doctor you relate well with and one who respects your wishes. No matter what happens, your doctor has to respect your labor preferences.

Picking the birthplace

This is another crucial decision. If you prefer giving birth at home, then you should plan towards it. Before making the decision, talk to your doctor to know the risks involved.

Some complications include:

  • A c-section
  • Labor induction
  • A blood transfusion
  • Vacuum extraction or forceps
  • Treatment for vaginal tears or laceration

Research on unconventional pain relief methods

Some methods include relaxation techniques, focused breathing techniques, hypnosis, walking and massage or touch therapy. In your third trimester, you can speak to your doctor about which of these methods you prefer.

Make a birth plan

This helps you detail all the events to keep all parties on the same page. List out all your pain preferences, requests and more in the plan.

Low carb diet is very popular when it comes to our fitness regime and losing weight. But the problem arises when you are pregnant. Is it safe to continue with low carb diet? The answer is usually yes. However, one should not be dependent on low carbs during pregnancy. It is, after all, a stage when you require more strength, not the urge of losing weight.

Low carb is safe during pregnancy if you are consuming healthy carbs in order to match your nutritional needs. Some foods that are extremely low-carb are not safe during this period. Without sufficient amount of carbohydrates in our body, your body starts producing ketones. These can put your infant at a risk of brain damage. Such is the severity of carb shortage that one should never rely on diets that contain no carbohydrates.

Don’t know what to feed your babies, toddlers, threenagers and beyond. I have co-authored 2 baby feeding eBooks! Bub Grub is the very first stage of solids, how to make it yourself and what to start with!!! And then there is Crawler Cuisine to Toddler Tucker which is everything else in between. Even for teenagers and adults! The meals are delicious, catered for food sensitivities, little tummy friendly and are whole foods based. As a fitness enthusiast, you may wonder if it is safe to run while pregnant. Experts believe that you can hit the road during your pregnancy. However, you need to take some steps to stay safe as you run.

What you should know

Before starting, discuss your plans with your doctor. You should also ensure that you stay hydrated, wear loose-fitting clothing, stretch and warm up, carry your mobile phone and run in a populated and well-lit area.

Avoid jogging in humidity and heat and don’t run until you become breathless. Stop if you have chest, joint pain or dizziness. Try not to overeat and take more frequent, smaller meals.

Running during the first trimester

Ensure that you use only shock absorbing and high-quality shoes that fit your arches and ankles as well. Use a sports bra that offers support and also adjusts when your breasts grow. Take lots of water before running.

Second trimester

During this period, it is safer to avoid jogging on trails because it exposes you to the risk of tripping. Also, consider a route with restrooms so you can easily access them when you need to.

Third trimester

A brisk walk is ideal during this period. Kegel exercises can also come in handy. If you can still jog, go ahead but be careful.

Itching during pregnancy is very common. It can be annoying to have to deal with it. Here are some tips on what causes it and how to handle it:

Causes of itching

Itching nipples, breasts, buttocks, tummy, feet and hands may be caused by various hormonal changes. The skin drying out while it stretches over the body also causes itching. Itching stops after childbirth, but if you develop a rash during pregnancy talk to your doctor.

Solutions to itching

Some tips to ease itching include:

  • Don’t use one with irritating perfumes in it. Get one with cocoa butter, vitamin E ointment, or a balm.
  • Use an oatmeal bath and calamine lotion. Don’t apply the calamine lotion on your nipples because it dries it out.
  • Don’t take hot baths because they also dry out the skin. A warm bath should suffice.
  • Wear breathable cotton or loose clothing.
  • Use a humidifier in your bedroom to prevent drying out of your skin.
  • Use a damp towel to ease the itching.

Even though it may seem desirable to scratch it, but it is not advisable. Scratching makes it worse, and the skin becomes tender. This could make your nipples more sensitive during breastfeeding.

As your tummy grows, the itching may increase. But when the baby comes, you won’t remember the discomfort anymore.

During pregnancy, difficulty sleeping is quite common. This is because it gets uncomfortable in the 1st and 3rd trimesters. You can get a good night’s sleep if you follow these tips:

Use pillows

Using pillows can come in handy when you feel restless. Use it for belly and back support. Tuck in the pillow between the bent knees to support the lower back. The side sleeping position is recommended for pregnant women. Tucking the pillow behind the back helps maintain this position all through the night.

An extra pillow can also soothe heartburn. Try an extra pillow to push up your head as you sleep. Many expectant mothers feel relieved when they raise the head of the bed. You can do this by sliding pillows under the mattress head.

Pillows for hip relief

Use an egg crate mattress pad on your mattress for hip relief. It helps promote a better quality of sleep especially when your hips hurt when you rest on your side.

What you should eat

What you eat and when you consume the food can affect sleep quality. So it would help if you were careful about this. Taking a warm glass of milk before bed can help aid sleep. Lots of experts believe that the amino acid L-tryptophan makes the eyelids heavy when it increases the level of serotonin in the brain.

Kegel exercises may not be visible like regular exercises, but it strengthens the pelvic floor muscle. These muscles support the uterus, bladder, and rectum. While pregnant, you can do Kegel exercises. Some benefits it offers include:

Improved bladder control

Before or after the baby comes, some women experience bladder problems that make them leak urine. Vaginal delivery increases the risk, but Kegel exercises prevent such problems and treat it as well.

Strengthens pelvic organ support

Pelvic organ prolapse can occur during vaginal birth because the pregnancy weakens the muscles on the pelvic floor. Vaginal birth also plays a large role. Some organs that may be affected during a prolapse include the urethra, uterus, or bowel. The pelvic floor muscles are weakened and can no longer provide adequate support for the organs. Doctors often recommend Kegel exercises to strengthen the muscles.

Reduces the risk of incontinence

Fecal incontinence can be reduced by kegel exercises. It does so by strengthening the muscles of the rectum, and it can prevent fecal incontinence.

This exercise also helps prepare you for the birth of your baby. It builds the ability to stay calm and control the muscles while preparing for birth. After the baby comes, Kegels heal the perineal tissues that overstretch during childbirth.
