As a fitness enthusiast, you may wonder if it is safe to run while pregnant. Experts believe that you can hit the road during your pregnancy. However, you need to take some steps to stay safe as you run.

What you should know

Before starting, discuss your plans with your doctor. You should also ensure that you stay hydrated, wear loose-fitting clothing, stretch and warm up, carry your mobile phone and run in a populated and well-lit area.

Avoid jogging in humidity and heat and don’t run until you become breathless. Stop if you have chest, joint pain or dizziness. Try not to overeat and take more frequent, smaller meals.

Running during the first trimester

Ensure that you use only shock absorbing and high-quality shoes that fit your arches and ankles as well. Use a sports bra that offers support and also adjusts when your breasts grow. Take lots of water before running.

Second trimester

During this period, it is safer to avoid jogging on trails because it exposes you to the risk of tripping. Also, consider a route with restrooms so you can easily access them when you need to.

Third trimester

A brisk walk is ideal during this period. Kegel exercises can also come in handy. If you can still jog, go ahead but be careful.
