Junk food is naturally tastier than normal food. During pregnancy, your cravings for junk foods will increase, and it is tempting to indulge. Should you eat junk food during this time? No, you should not. You should be careful about what you eat during pregnancy, and this type of food is undesirable.

Why junk foods are harmful during pregnancy

Both baby and mother need lots of nutrients for healthy weight gain. The nutrients also aid in bone, brain and immune system development of your baby.

Allergies

Junk food during pregnancy exposes the baby to a higher risk of allergies. This is caused by the high sugar content, and it can cause asthma as well.

Genetic abnormalities

This food offers no nutritional value and also increases the risk of the baby developing genetic defects. The defects may extend beyond the first and second generations.

Excessive weight gain

When you eat junk food during pregnancy, you could gain weight excessively, and this can put you and your baby at risk of preterm labor, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, congenital disabilities, sleep apnea, miscarriage and a host of other abnormalities.

Digestive problems

Besides hurting the unborn baby, junk food upsets your stomach and can cause indigestion, bloat, and gas. This type of food also lacks fiber content that is necessary for smooth bowel movements.

While it is unclear whether music has an actual effect on the fetal development, some studies indicate that fetuses can hear and react to sound. At this point, no research supports the idea that playing music when your baby is in the womb makes it smarter.

However, if you do wish to play music to your unborn child, here’s how you should do it:

It’s best to play music in the stereo during the day. Do not use headphones on your belly as it may overstimulate your baby.

“People tend to turn up the sound because they think it needs to be loud to penetrate the abdomen,” say experts like DiPietro. “But amniotic fluid is actually a good conductor of sound.”

The volume shouldn’t be higher than 65 decibels (dB) – about as loud as background music at a store.

Since there isn’t a sufficient study on the effects of music on unborn babies, only play music if you actually like it. It can’t hurt. “When a woman relaxes, that’s good for the fetus and that’s an indirect effect of music on the fetus,” says Janet DiPietro, a developmental psychologist.

Working while pregnant is very difficult because pregnancy comes with its own symptoms. You have to deal with morning sickness, malaise, and stress. It is worse for women who have other children. How can you function properly at work while pregnant?

Inform your boss and coworkers

When your boss, as well as coworkers, know about your pregnancy, working will be less challenging. Whenever you can’t perform as you would normally because of the pregnancy, your boss and coworkers will understand the reason why. They won’t assume that you are lazy.

Don’t hide how you feel

Be honest with yourself, as it will help you to determine when you’re not performing well. This way, you can tell your coworkers and boss when you’re not feeling well, to give them a heads up.

Plan for bad days and good days

As an expectant working mother, you should expect to have bad days and good days. Some days, you will be lively, full of excitement and energy while other days, you’ll feel like a sack of potatoes. You may also have morning sickness and not want to move around so much.

Be safety conscious

For people who work outdoors or in extreme weather conditions, it can be dangerous for the baby. Ask your boss for a different department that offers safer working conditions.

Sunbathing is not harmful, but during pregnancy, it could be. It is not dangerous because we get Vitamin D from the sunlight, but the risks of too much exposure is the problem.

Some risks of sunbathing during pregnancy

Aside from the risks of sunbathing such as skin cancer and sunburn, there are other risks during pregnancy.

A pregnant woman’s temperature can increase when she is exposed to the sun. This can cause dehydration and preterm labor. It also increases the fetus’s temperature and can cause brain damage.

Also, estrogen and other hormones increase chloasma risk when the expectant mother is exposed to the UV rays of the sun. These dark spots may not disappear after pregnancy.

The last risk is sunburn, which increases the risk of developing melanoma.

Should you use artificial tanning methods?

Although tanning beds reduce the risk of overexposure, it could still cause skin problems and other disorders. The UV rays increase the aging rate of the skin, and this also increases skin cancer risks.

Precautions to take while going out:

  • Don’t go out during midday
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes on your body
  • Use sunglasses and large hats to cover your face
  • Only use pregnancy approved sunscreens.
  • Talk to your doctor about the possibility of supplementing Vitamin D.

Onion forms a big part of the recipes all over the world. It enhances taste as well as the value of the meal. During pregnancy, you can eat onion. However, just like with every other thing, taking too much of it is not ideal. It is generally safe for consumption for pregnant women.

Here are some benefits of onion:

Detoxification

The body should not contain heavy metal because it is harmful to both mother and baby. Onions have methionine and cysteine that help detoxify the body.

 Boosts Immunity

Onions contain vitamin c, and this antioxidant property helps boost immunity. It also helps the baby grow safely until it is time to be born.

Stops constipation

Onions are also rich in dietary fiber and can help regulate bowel movement. Sufferers of constipation while expecting can eat raw onion to alleviate the effects of constipation.

Blood pressure regulation

Onions contain phytonutrients that regulate blood pressure. Using an onion to cook helps keep certain pregnancy-related complications such as gestational hypertension and preeclampsia.

Fights off gestational diabetes

It also contains chromium, which helps prevent resistance of insulin and regulates blood sugar. While it is safe to eat onions during pregnancy, remember to do so in moderation as you satisfy your cravings.

Giving birth in a hospital is safe and all, but ask any mom and they’ll tell you a hospital stay gets uncomfortable pretty fast. Luckily, there are items you can carry to the hospital to ease you stay as you welcome your baby.

Comfortable footwear

If you’re healthy enough to walk after the birth, you’ll find that you need your own shoes or slippers to walk around because most hospitals don’t offer any. The room floors get dirty quickly with all those people moving in and out so you have no option.

Quick snacks

Hospital meals are offered during set hours, but they aren’t always conducive for breastfeeding moms. It’s smart to pack some snacks along in your hospital bag for those hours between meal time unless you’re ready to face the hunger.

Your own pads

Hospitals offer you pads after the birth alright, but they are large, heavy and quite frankly, uncomfortable. You’ll want to carry your own pads from home, the type you’re comfortable with.

Reading materials

There will be a TV in your hospital room but not much to watch, especially in the wee hours of the night when you find yourself unable to sleep because of the baby. All the more reason to pack those magazines and novels.

If you plan to have a natural birth, you should get ready for it. You need to plan the place of delivery, as well as pain management techniques. This helps smoothen the process so you can have a pleasant birth.

Finding the right healthcare provider

You need to find a good healthcare provider that align with your choice. It is better to pick a doctor you relate well with and one who respects your wishes. No matter what happens, your doctor has to respect your labor preferences.

Picking the birthplace

This is another crucial decision. If you prefer giving birth at home, then you should plan towards it. Before making the decision, talk to your doctor to know the risks involved.

Some complications include:

  • A c-section
  • Labor induction
  • A blood transfusion
  • Vacuum extraction or forceps
  • Treatment for vaginal tears or laceration

Research on unconventional pain relief methods

Some methods include relaxation techniques, focused breathing techniques, hypnosis, walking and massage or touch therapy. In your third trimester, you can speak to your doctor about which of these methods you prefer.

Make a birth plan

This helps you detail all the events to keep all parties on the same page. List out all your pain preferences, requests and more in the plan.

Stay fit

You need a lot of stamina to have a baby, so try to keep fit. Ask your healthcare provider about the best exercises for you.
