All parents have had those mornings when their kid saunters into the room with their head hanging low and says the words they dread: “I don’t feel good.”

Such a situation calls for some very quick thinking. To send them to school, or not to send them to school? That is the question. Fortunately, there is pretty much a five-point checklist of major symptoms that parents can go by to determine if their child can tough it out or if they need a sick day.

Fever

Fevers are a big red flag. If your child has a fever of over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, then they should stay home. Even if the fever seems to break, it needs to stay away for at least 24 hours before returning to school should even be considered.

Congestion and Coughing

If your kid has thick mucus paired with a loud, harsh cough, you might as well pull out your nurse hat. Be mindful that sometimes a cough will linger with children. However, if you notice that it’s not getting any better after a few days, it might be time to make a doctors appointment.

Belly Bubbles

Vomiting and diarrhea are definitely symptoms that warrant staying home. Make sure they’re drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Stomach bugs are very contagious so you want to ensure that you’re not sending them back to school too soon. A good rule of thumb to go by is to keep them at home at least 24 hours after their last eventful trip to the bathroom.

Skin Symptoms

Dry patches, rashes, and other skin conditions can be difficult for you to diagnose as serious or not. Get in contact with their doctor right away to have them make the best call on that. Pink eye though is a whole different ballgame. It is easy to diagnose considering the biggest symptom is waking up to your eye crusted shut. If your child has pink eye, definitely keep them at home! It is very contagious.

Pain

If your kid is in obvious pain or major discomfort they need to stay home from school.

As a newly mother, you know how breastfeeding enhances your baby’s immune system. It prevents the newborn from several diseases including allergies, and infections. But what if the mother is sick? Can the milk prevent the baby from getting infected with the disease of the breastfeeding mother? Well, breastfeeding does prevent your baby from getting sick up to some extent.

If a mother is suffering from a cold and flu, breastfeeding is commonly continued. The infant receives the antibodies produced in mother’s body to fight the illness. However, the road is not safe all the time. Sometimes, breastfeeding can become dangerous when the illness can pose a higher risk to baby’s delicate metabolic system.

In certain cases, illness can impact the process of breastfeeding. There might be occurrences of changes in mother’s bodies. These include:

  • Change in the color of the milk
  • Low or delayed milk supply
  • Decreased or increased feedings
  • Sore nipples
  • Fussy baby at the breast
  • Increased sensitivity

If you are ill, you can recover the flow of milk by breastfeeding more often as it will urge your body to produce more milk.

In this age of smartphones and tablets, we parents have legitimate concerns about the potential dangers of internet use for our children. We certainly don’t want our child to become a victim of cyberbullying or of some dangerous, predatory character.

So how do we keep our children safe? Here are some basic steps you can take to keep your child safer:

Communicate & set down the rules

Talk to your children about the dangers of the internet, and about appropriate behavior. Tell them you will be monitoring their internet and cell phone activity at all times for their protection.

Ban computers from the bedroom

Any device that has internet access belongs in the family communal space to allow close monitoring of what your child is doing online.

Install a monitoring program

There are lots of monitoring programs available to which you can subscribe to block certain kinds of websites, and record all device history. Some programs will alert you to suspicious activity, and some even allow you to see what your child is doing online in real time.

Friend them

Insist that your child allows you to ‘Friend’ them on social media, and make sure you know all their passwords.

Is it safe for you and your baby if you wear heels during pregnancy? Many expectant mothers wonder if it is safe, especially if they are used to putting on heels regularly. Heels should be placed on hold during this period because it could cause some discomfort and is risky. Here are some other reasons why you should not wear heels during pregnancy:

Back pain

Heels alter your posture and bend your pelvic muscles forward, and this can make your back appear rounder. This posture is not comfortable and can hurt your back during pregnancy.

Cramps

Wearing heels for long could cause muscle cramps since the calf muscles are suspended in a contracted position. This pain can be worse during pregnancy.

Swollen feet

Edema or swollen feet is common during pregnancy. Wearing heels with this condition can be uncomfortable.

Lack of balance

Your ankle strength reduces because of hormonal changes and extra weight. You may fall easily without this balance.

Stretched muscles

Ligaments in the calf and ankle loosen like the abdomen and back due to hormones induced by pregnancy.

If you still choose to wear heels, be careful while wearing them. It is safer to keep the heels until your little one comes.

Onion forms a big part of the recipes all over the world. It enhances taste as well as the value of the meal. During pregnancy, you can eat onion. However, just like with every other thing, taking too much of it is not ideal. It is generally safe for consumption for pregnant women.

Here are some benefits of onion:

Detoxification

The body should not contain heavy metal because it is harmful to both mother and baby. Onions have methionine and cysteine that help detoxify the body.

 Boosts Immunity

Onions contain vitamin c, and this antioxidant property helps boost immunity. It also helps the baby grow safely until it is time to be born.

Stops constipation

Onions are also rich in dietary fiber and can help regulate bowel movement. Sufferers of constipation while expecting can eat raw onion to alleviate the effects of constipation.

Blood pressure regulation

Onions contain phytonutrients that regulate blood pressure. Using an onion to cook helps keep certain pregnancy-related complications such as gestational hypertension and preeclampsia.

Fights off gestational diabetes

It also contains chromium, which helps prevent resistance of insulin and regulates blood sugar. While it is safe to eat onions during pregnancy, remember to do so in moderation as you satisfy your cravings.

Here are tips that can help reduce injuries associated with the playground.

Active supervision

Whenever your kids are on the playground, you should keep your eyes on them. Kids enjoy trying out different equipment on the playground, and may not take the appropriate safety precaution. This is one of the major causes of mishaps on the playground. To keep them safe while they have their fun, you need to keep an eye on them to supervise their activities.

Appropriate outfit

Your kids should be dressed in outfits that are appropriate for the playground. Outfits which include necklaces, beads, scarves, or outfits that are oversized are not appropriate for such activity. Wrong clothing could be caught by the playground equipment and cause serious injuries.

Shock-absorbing surfaces

The severity of injuries on the playground can also be determined by the surface of the playground. Playgrounds with sandy or stony surfaces can cause injuries sustained to be severe. Surfaces with wood chips can also cause severe injuries, while a concrete surface will cause more severe injuries. Playgrounds with shock-absorbing surfaces are better because they cushion the kids if they ever fall on them.

There are however some clear and basic rules which children should keep in mind each time they are on the playground. Some include:

  • Kids should keep away from broken equipment.
  • Kids should not try climbing the slides through its exit point.
  • Don’t stand on swinging equipment.
  • Never walk or stand too close to swinging equipment that is currently in use.
  • Kids should use both hands while climbing.
  • Avoid shoving or pushing while trying to get on any of the playground equipment.

Driving with kids younger than 13 years old in the front seat is not safe even with a seat belt. Riders in the front seat are more at risk in the event of a Collison. For kids, this risk is even higher. Airbags can endanger smaller kids after inflation. If your child must stay in the front seat, ensure that the airbags are disabled. This is only recommended if the car doesn’t have rear seats.

Car safety tips

Different states have distinct laws on car safety, but a lot of them are identical. Some of these include:

  • Children under the age of thirteen must ride in the back seat.
  • Kids who are not up to 4’9” tall must use booster and safety seats.
  • The booster and safety seats must be suitable for the child’s weight and height. Always check the label for more details. Also, ensure that you read the instructions on the car seat.
  • Find a certified technician to install the car seat. It is better to find a qualified car seat technician to set it up. This way you will be sure that it is properly fitted.
  • Ensure that everyone in the car buckles up before driving. Don’t get tired of teaching people around you these rules. Also, you need to obey them so your kids can learn from your actions.

Low carb diet is very popular when it comes to our fitness regime and losing weight. But the problem arises when you are pregnant. Is it safe to continue with low carb diet? The answer is usually yes. However, one should not be dependent on low carbs during pregnancy. It is, after all, a stage when you require more strength, not the urge of losing weight.

Low carb is safe during pregnancy if you are consuming healthy carbs in order to match your nutritional needs. Some foods that are extremely low-carb are not safe during this period. Without sufficient amount of carbohydrates in our body, your body starts producing ketones. These can put your infant at a risk of brain damage. Such is the severity of carb shortage that one should never rely on diets that contain no carbohydrates.

Don’t know what to feed your babies, toddlers, threenagers and beyond. I have co-authored 2 baby feeding eBooks! Bub Grub is the very first stage of solids, how to make it yourself and what to start with!!! And then there is Crawler Cuisine to Toddler Tucker which is everything else in between. Even for teenagers and adults! The meals are delicious, catered for food sensitivities, little tummy friendly and are whole foods based. No recipe is too hard or contains a thousand ingredients, nothing is too costly as I am a Mum too. I get it! Check them out, gift to a friend. These books have been labeled “a Baby Foodie Bible”. If you still persist on the habit of having low-carb diets, it is best to consult doctors. They can suggest good and modified low-carb diets.

In a nutshell, if you are cutting sugars and processed foods out of your diet, it is ok. But if you are eating only pork or bacon all day, you need to add some potatoes for getting carbs.

To keep your home safe for your kids, you must childproof it to prevent accidents. Kids are curious and are prone to injuries when they play unhindered. You can preempt such accidents by following these tips:

Secure the doors with doorknob covers

The first step to take while childproofing is to ensure that kids can leave the house or enter unsafe areas such as the kitchen.

These covers make it difficult for toddlers to turn and open the doors. Place them on all doors leading outside, bathroom doors and kitchen doors. You can also choose to place them on your closet doors and other doors with unsafe rooms.

Cabinet Locks

In most homes, cabinets hold unsafe products such as medicines and knives. You wouldn’t want your little one to get a hold of such items. Secure your cabinets with an interior latch that can be screwed into the cabinets.

Stove Guard

Stoves can be a hazard to kids, and they can be burned or hurt. You can use a stove guard to prevent this from happening. When cooking, you should turn handles away from the front of the stove.

Plastic guards

Plastic guards also come in handy to keep kids away from the electronics in the house such as the VCR, TV, or DVD player.

Stair gates with extensions

Your stairs should be secured to prevent falls in the home. Use swing stair gates at the bottom and top of all staircases in the home.

Decorating your little one’s bedroom can be a fun activity, and many parents look forward to it. Picking colors and bedding are important, but choosing a pillow is even more important.

Does your newborn need a pillow?

All new parents are concerned about the comfort of their baby. However, you should note that any bedding material in the bed space could cause suffocation. Newborns do not have control over their heads and necks. Pillows could cover their mouths and noses.

Parents are advised to use only a firm sleep surface, and kids should be laid on their backs.

When can a pillow be introduced?

Toddlers can begin to use pillows at 2 to 3 years of age. This should ideally happen when the child is transitioning to a regular bed. At this age, they can move their heads whenever they are uncomfortable so you won’t have to worry about a suffocation hazard.

Will babies be uncomfortable without pillows?

Don’t worry; a baby will not be uncomfortable without a pillow. Since they are not used to sleeping with it, babies won’t need pillows. Even at 2 to 3 years, they still don’t need pillows. Be sure to choose a sleeping arrangement that they are comfortable with.

When decorating the crib, use a fitted sheet on the firm mattress. Don’t add any stuffed animals or blankets. Soon your child will be old enough for all that.
