All parents have had those mornings when their kid saunters into the room with their head hanging low and says the words they dread: “I don’t feel good.”

Such a situation calls for some very quick thinking. To send them to school, or not to send them to school? That is the question. Fortunately, there is pretty much a five-point checklist of major symptoms that parents can go by to determine if their child can tough it out or if they need a sick day.

Fever

Fevers are a big red flag. If your child has a fever of over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, then they should stay home. Even if the fever seems to break, it needs to stay away for at least 24 hours before returning to school should even be considered.

Congestion and Coughing

If your kid has thick mucus paired with a loud, harsh cough, you might as well pull out your nurse hat. Be mindful that sometimes a cough will linger with children. However, if you notice that it’s not getting any better after a few days, it might be time to make a doctors appointment.

Belly Bubbles

Vomiting and diarrhea are definitely symptoms that warrant staying home. Make sure they’re drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Stomach bugs are very contagious so you want to ensure that you’re not sending them back to school too soon. A good rule of thumb to go by is to keep them at home at least 24 hours after their last eventful trip to the bathroom.

Skin Symptoms

Dry patches, rashes, and other skin conditions can be difficult for you to diagnose as serious or not. Get in contact with their doctor right away to have them make the best call on that. Pink eye though is a whole different ballgame. It is easy to diagnose considering the biggest symptom is waking up to your eye crusted shut. If your child has pink eye, definitely keep them at home! It is very contagious.

Pain

If your kid is in obvious pain or major discomfort they need to stay home from school.

A soulful smile, a tight grip of small fingers on your thumb, a sweet cuddle of tiny arms and a voice that stirs satisfaction in the heart-these elements are common for a parent with a newborn in his or her home.

As a parent, it becomes imperative to care for the newborn in an immaculate way. This also involves massaging his body so that the overall bone structure becomes strong and rigid when he grows. While some parents devise their own way of doing things, others look for expert tips to massage the baby the perfect way.

Given below is a helpful technique through which you can massage your baby in a safer and effective way:

The foremost thing to do is to lay your baby on his stomach and make him stay there comfortably. Make sure that his head is turned to one side. Start massaging from his forehead towards the nape of the baby’s neck. Continue massaging each stroke from the center to the arm, each side at a time. While avoiding the spine, give soft massaging strokes from his neck towards his hips and then down the baby’s legs. Repeat the same method by laying the baby on his back.

Is it safe for you and your baby if you wear heels during pregnancy? Many expectant mothers wonder if it is safe, especially if they are used to putting on heels regularly. Heels should be placed on hold during this period because it could cause some discomfort and is risky. Here are some other reasons why you should not wear heels during pregnancy:

Back pain

Heels alter your posture and bend your pelvic muscles forward, and this can make your back appear rounder. This posture is not comfortable and can hurt your back during pregnancy.

Cramps

Wearing heels for long could cause muscle cramps since the calf muscles are suspended in a contracted position. This pain can be worse during pregnancy.

Swollen feet

Edema or swollen feet is common during pregnancy. Wearing heels with this condition can be uncomfortable.

Lack of balance

Your ankle strength reduces because of hormonal changes and extra weight. You may fall easily without this balance.

Stretched muscles

Ligaments in the calf and ankle loosen like the abdomen and back due to hormones induced by pregnancy.

If you still choose to wear heels, be careful while wearing them. It is safer to keep the heels until your little one comes.

Teaching your child to save money is crucial. Financial literacy early in life leads to happier, healthier and less stressful adult life. This life lesson isn’t exciting, and it may be difficult to make it fun for the little one but there are so many ways to make it interesting. Some include:

Give them pocket money

You can choose to give the child pocket money from time to time or create a system that rewards them with small amounts of cash for chores done around the house. The amount given doesn’t matter; the lesson is what matters.

Get a piggy bank

You can introduce your child to the concept of saving in a piggy bank after giving them pocket money. You can teach your child to split the pocket money to save, spend and give a percentage to charity. This helps prepare them for financial responsibility in the future.

Encourage them to set goals

If your kid loves a special toy, encourage him to save some money for it. Don’t try to influence all of their decisions, allow them to make some mistakes so they can learn from the experience.

Lead by example

Kids learn better from your actions. So, lead by making the right financial decisions, savings and separating needs from wants. When they get older, you can keep them informed about bills, grocery shopping and more. When you involve your child in such daily financial issues, you’ll equip them to be financially responsible in the future.

Your little ones would always eagerly wait for that story you would read to them right before bedtime. In fact, reading is not only good for the child but the parent as well. Here are some good reasons why you should read to your child before they drift off to slumberland:

It makes the relationship between parent and child stronger

After each day’s busy schedule, parent and child will have a chance for a one-on-one bonding. At their younger ages, the enthusiasm of children for stories makes them excitable and a parent is the best person who can draw this out of them.

Enhance vocabulary and imagination

Reading stories can expose the child to language and consequently, they will increase their vocabulary. When new words are encountered, take time to explain the word’s meaning.

Children’s bedtime stories usually deal with fantasy and this could give the child a chance to interpret the story in their own words or thoughts. In other words, their imagination can grow. Their concentration is amazing as they listen to each detail.

Tonight’s bedtime story was “Carlo Likes Counting.” It has colorful illustrations with lots of opportunities to count, practice colors, and name objects. The characters are a giraffe named Carlo and his curious sidekick Crackers the cat. • The “Carlo Likes Colors” book was one of Little Man’s favorite books when he was placed with us. I don’t even remember where we got it, but he loved it. I found this plush giraffe at Kohls (one of Nancy Tillman’s wonderful characters), and he instantly became Carlo. He’s been part of bedtime every night since. • Check it out here: Carlo Likes Counting https://www.amazon.com/dp/0763617741/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_wS3aBbYFJ27E1 • #billyreads #bedtimestories #carlothegiraffe #nancytillman #nancytillmangiraffe #fostercare #adoption #fostercaretoadoption #carlolikescounting #jessicaspanyol

Children can learn morals from the stories

Bedtime stories usually have happy endings and a moral that goes with it. It’s always the triumph of good against evil or right over wrong. Be sure to teach your child the story’s moral and gently explain it to the child’s level. Make it simple and understandable.

Thumb sucking is calming and comforting for kids. The habit starts when the child is younger and may continue when the child is older. How can you help your child to stop thumb sucking?

Don’t worry too much

Kids can suck their thumb without damaging the teeth or jaw alignment. It only becomes a problem when the permanent teeth start to develop.

When this happens, the child may need braces later in life. This does not apply to kids that suck their thumb passively.

Watch the child

If the child sucks vigorously, you should arrange to curb the habit as soon as possible. Consult a dentist if you notice changes in the child’s mouth and you are not sure about what is responsible for the problem.

Also, if the thumb of the infant becomes chapped and red from sucking apply some moisturizer at night.

Let it go

Many kids stop sucking their thumbs without any pressure by 2 to 4 years old. Others may continue for longer. Peer pressure in school also deters this habit. Nagging and punishing will not help but will intensify the desire to suck more. Do not resort to using unjust punishment to hasten the process.

Keep your child busy

Thumb sucking is more common when a child is bored. Identify the triggers and distract it with a fun activity.

Baby’s first haircut is weird and uncomfortable. You have to do it with care to avoid hurting them. Here are tips and guides that’ll help you when it is time to give your toddler its first haircut.

Bring a second outfit

In the course of trimming hair, your baby may refuse to wear the cape. This will make the hairs trimmed off to get onto the clothes. So, you would have to change the clothes to the second set you brought along.

Use toys

When coming to the salon, ensure to bring a toy they likes along with you. This toy will help occupy his hands while trimming his hair.

Come along with snacks

Whatever the baby is attracted to can be a useful tool, for occupying it during the barbing session. Some toddlers are attracted to snacks, so you should use this as an advantage here. Give them snacks, which will occupy their hands while getting the haircut. Don’t give the baby sticky things like lollipop to eat, so that everywhere doesn’t get messy.

Make it a pleasant experience

Your toddler’s experience at the first barbing salon is very important. It’s so important that it can determine his reaction when next he’s due for his haircut. Try to make the experience as pleasant as possible for him. If his experience turns out to be unpleasant, he may resist you the next time you want to take him there.

For young kids, spelling can be a challenge. Though the words are easy, kids will need to go through words over and over. This will beef up their confidence and performance in class. Here are tips on how to help your child:

Use a different pattern

If you tell your child to sit and memorize the different vocabulary in his spelling list, he might find it boring. The spelling test is an avenue to help your kid acquire a good grade. It also will help him learn healthy studying habits. Kids feel really good when they get good grades, and this beefs up their confidence.

Start on time

When your child returns with the spelling list, you’ll need to access him. The reason is to identify words that prove difficult for him.

Having done that, more attention should be given to words that are proving difficult. However, you’ll need to mix them up with words he is good at, build his confidence.

Don’t wait until it’s late

Don’t leave the spelling training until the child has a spelling test. When you leave the studying until a day before the test, he might not have those words well memorized. This can sap his confidence, and may not produce the best result he should have gotten in his test.

Pay more attention to the trouble words

If you have discovered his trouble words, help him by making him repeat the letters of the spelling word. Have him write them out in a repeated form. For instance, if the word is “Please”, make him write on each line in this form “P, Pl, Ple, Plea, Pleas, and Please”.
