Allowing your teen to have access to credit means that they can purchase their own gas and have some backup cash when there is an emergency. However, it is two sides of a coin. It can also mean an endless opportunity to spend and get into serious debt.

You should consider several factors to determine if your child needs a credit card. The following tips should be considered:

Zero money sense

Where a teen has no experience with money and does not understand that there is a need to delay gratification, this will not be a wise thing to do. If possible, prepare the teen to handle such situations when they come.

No time to coach the teen

If you do not have the time to coach your teen, then you should not be giving them a credit card. You would never give your teen your car keys without teaching him to drive first. In this case, you can outsource the responsibility.

An irresponsible teen

Every teen is different. You should not give your teen a credit card if he is irresponsible. This is because fiscal responsibility is the most difficult to handle. If he cannot handle smaller tasks, then a credit card will be a serious mistake.

When teens finally pass their driving test, they can’t wait to get their licenses and be free at last. This is perfectly normal, but parents can teach them some tips to help them drive safely during the winter season.

Some tips include:

Reduce speed

Car tires do not have adequate traction on snow. This is why you should reduce speed. Also, you should be smooth with your pedal and steering inputs. Drive carefully.

Do one thing at a time

Don’t brake and turn simultaneously. This puts too much pressure on one tire. It could lose traction. Rather, brake, turn and accelerate. Keep your eyes on the target at all times.

Some other tips for driving in the snow include:

  • Keep a scraper with a brush in the car
  • Make sure the windshield washers function well.
  • Check that the wiper fluid is filled up
  • On slippery surfaces, brake gently. Use light pressure while accelerating
  • Before digging your car out of snow, make sure the exhaust tailpipe is clear from snow. If it is blocked, you could be at risk of inhaling carbon monoxide.
  • Test the brakes when starting out in bad weather to see how it can take before the car stops.
  • If you drive a white car, turn on your lights during a snowstorm. This prevents your car from being camouflaged from other drivers.

Kids grow up so fast. One minute they are playing with dolls and another, they want to go shopping without you. This fun activity doesn’t have to be a war. If you plan and prepare ahead of time, you will have more fun and bond with your teen.

Here are some tips to help:

Set a budget

Do not be carried away by clothes in the store. Work with your available budget before stepping out the door. This prepares your teen’s mind for what she can buy and what is too expensive. It also teaches her to shop with limits. If your teen chooses to buy an expensive item that is not in the budget, you can arrange for her to pay for it personally.

Prepare a wishlist

Have a plan of the type of items you want to buy. Does she need jeans, wedges, tees or even stilettos? Be sure to take inventory of the present wardrobe to help her decide on which items are more important.

Stand by your word

If you don’t want the teen to wear a particular type of dress, be sure to let her know how you feel about it. She may not like it, but you know what best for her.

Learning how to drive a car is something lots of teens can’t wait to do. Parents, on the other hand, are never excited about this. It is normal to feel anxious about your teen driving. This phase is quite normal.

Note that the risk of a car crash for a learner is lower than an experienced driver.

You can help your child by:

Planning ahead before driving lessons

If you plan properly, your teen will be a responsible and safe driver.

You can start preparing your child for this process when they reach early to mid-teen age. This is before the child is qualified to apply for a learner’s permit. Consider these factors:

  • How will she learn? Will you prefer to teach her by yourself or you prefer a driving instructor? Do you want a combination of both?
  • You should also consider the legal age requirement for learners. The number of passengers and type of car should be considered according to the requirements of your jurisdiction.
  • Ground rules on using the family’s car. Will the child be allowed to drive with her friends in the car after being licensed? Can she drive at night?
  • Car insurance. Check if your car insurance covers the teenager.

Be sure to inform your child that the process of learning to drive and being licensed to drive is the beginning of a lifelong learning process.

Millenials are notorious for not knowing how to ‘adult’. Parents are becoming more and more concerned about their children being able to do everyday things. Here’s a list of life skills every child should know by the time they reach high school.

Meals And More

It’s really surprising that some adults don’t know how to cook even the most simple meals. Eating is essential to life, yet some people rely solely on other resources for food. Don’t let your child go through life thinking a Big Mac is the only way to keep from starving.

Knowing how to cook will reduce the risk of heart disease and other common health issues related to food. Not only that, you don’t want your child coming over for dinner every night once they’re in their 30’s.

Help Out With Everyday Life

Yes, academics and extra-curricular activities are important, but they aren’t real life. Every child should know what it’s like to do chores, have a job, or contribute to the family unit in some way. This prepares them for the real world and even later on when they have to take care of you.

Wakey Wakey

Every child should be taught to wake up on time by themselves. Wrangling them out of bed every morning isn’t doing them any favors. It sets them up for failure in the future; you can’t hold a job if you can’t get up for work on time.
