As if new moms don’t have enough to worry about! When you’re a new mom, you’ll experience situations where you’ll feel caught between the need to respond politely and your “mother bear” instinct. To help you out, here are some tips for handling these awkward circumstances:
Your friend wants to touch your baby without washing her hands first
The best thing to do here is to say something before your friend even gets a hold of your little one. It’s even better if you instruct everyone to wash their hands as soon as they arrive.
Someone you don’t know reaches for your little one without washing his hands first
This is a bit harder to handle but not impossible. You can gently move your little one out of reach than say something like, “Sorry but we’re not doing kisses and hugs today.”
Someone close keeps on giving you unsolicited advice
The best thing to do in this situation is by giving a PNR or a positive, non-committal response. This is a lot better than flat-out rejecting the advice.
Your friend wants to come over with a “germy” child
In such situation, keep in mind that you’re the one in control. So you can say that it’s not a good day for a visit then think of a good excuse why.
People need to be quiet so they don’t wake up your newborn
You can either politely tell everyone to keep their voices low or establish from the beginning that your friends’ visit can’t take too long.
