How to Encourage Your Kids to Read

Beyond academic grades, your child’s life can be improved in so many ways by reading. This is no easy task since reading is not exciting for some children. How can you help?

Start small

You should use a simpler book that the child can understand easily. It could be a preschool level book or a first-grade book. The main aim is to teach word and sentence structure.

Read for fun

Allow the child to choose what she prefers to read. Don’t restrict her options to just books; comics are also ideal. You can influence the kind of books the child picks later on, but if you push too hard, she may lose interest in it entirely.

Hold discussions

People who read a lot and love the habit usually discuss the books. You can read the books separately and plan to discuss the contents later on. Surely, you will find some important life lessons at the end of the discussions.

Be invested

Ensure that you read to your child every night. You don’t need to read aloud all the time. Just sit with the child and read your own book while the child reads as well. it is far more productive than watching TV all day.

Lead by example

To teach the child the importance of reading, you should also develop the habit of reading. It does not need to be done every time; your breaks will suffice.
