Toddlers have funny habits especially when it comes to food. They are quite difficult to satisfy and often fixate on a type of food for weeks and hate it later. The circle continues for months. If you need some ideas for your fussy toddler, you have come to the right place.

Milkshakes

This interesting breakfast will surely pique your child’s interest. Make a yogurt or milk based smoothie with some sprinkles on the top and give the child for breakfast.

French toast

You can also make a French toast and slice it into smaller sticks served with some syrup. This is one irresistible snack for little children.

Banana pancakes

You can also make pancakes with batter and add some fresh banana slices to make it healthier. Dip the pancakes into the batter and cook like normal pancakes; they can eat it with syrup on the side or honey. This is only recommended for a child who is more than one year.

Strawberry yogurt parfaits

This breakfast looks like a dessert, and this makes it more appetizing. Your child will eat it up without hesitation. Layer in some low-fat vanilla yogurt and top it off with strawberries and granola. You can repeat the process until it is filled up. Sprinkle some maple syrup to give it a distinctive taste.

While it is unclear whether music has an actual effect on the fetal development, some studies indicate that fetuses can hear and react to sound. At this point, no research supports the idea that playing music when your baby is in the womb makes it smarter.

However, if you do wish to play music to your unborn child, here’s how you should do it:

It’s best to play music in the stereo during the day. Do not use headphones on your belly as it may overstimulate your baby.

“People tend to turn up the sound because they think it needs to be loud to penetrate the abdomen,” say experts like DiPietro. “But amniotic fluid is actually a good conductor of sound.”

The volume shouldn’t be higher than 65 decibels (dB) – about as loud as background music at a store.

Since there isn’t a sufficient study on the effects of music on unborn babies, only play music if you actually like it. It can’t hurt. “When a woman relaxes, that’s good for the fetus and that’s an indirect effect of music on the fetus,” says Janet DiPietro, a developmental psychologist.

You’ve spent more money on cute onesies than ever imagined possible, but they look so adorable you’ll do it all again this year. Prolonging the quality of these little garments is naturally a priority for you, so follow these onesie saving tips.

Spit-up

Lay the garment on a flat surface and gently scrape what you can off the fabric with a bristle brush (an old toothbrush will do). Then, cover the remaining stain with bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and after a few minutes, pour some club soda on top to create a fizzing effect before adding to the washer.

Baby Food

Gently scrape away the excess before covering the stain in any liquid laundry detergent, soak in warm water for about 20 minutes, remove from the water and apply a stain remover if you have one. Wash at a high heat depending on the fabric.

Baby Oil

Rub the stain with dish soap before thoroughly rinsing the area under a warm tap, apply a stain remover and wash on the highest heat the fabric can tolerate.

Poop And Pee

Remove excess with a tissue and cover the stain in a liquid detergent, soak in warm water for 30 minutes before adding to a hot wash.

For kids, moving can be stressful. They often worry about adjusting to a new environment, making new friends, acclimating to the new school, and leaving their old life behind. There are so many things you can do to help your child. Some include:

Allow the kids to have a voice

Give your child lots of opportunities to speak about its worries. Children may feel better if they can vocalize how they feel. When they get it off their chest, they will feel more positive about the move.

Reassure the kids

If you have given your child a chance to voice its feelings, acknowledge what he/she says. Reassure the child by discussing the great things to look forward to in the new location. Try to get the child to participate in social activities in the new location.

Relocating with little children

Moving with younger kids is more difficult, but the emotional impact is far easier. This is because such kids have not had the chance to bond with other children.

However, you should listen to them to know if they have anxiety about moving.

Relocating with adolescents

Teen years are tougher than you can imagine. It is even tougher on a teen who has to start life all over again. Be mindful about how your teen feels about the move. Teens may express themselves by showing frustration. This makes it difficult to communicate with them.

Maintain all old connections

Help keep the lines of communication open for your kids and their old friends.

Few babies enjoy bathtime and most times, it gets stressful. But with the right planning, your baby can begin to enjoy bathtime. These tips can help make bath time fun for you and your baby, and reduce stress drastically for you both.

Use toys

Babies are usually attracted to toys. Provide lots of toys, and load up the bathtub with them. This can help distract her while you bath her.

Singing

Some adults naturally enjoy singing while bathing. Why don’t you use this as a tool for entertaining your baby while bathing her? Singing helps to ease tension.

Get a tub seat

The tub seat reduces the stress involved in bathing, both for you and your baby. It allows the baby some freedom in the tub.

Playing and tickling

Unlike adults, who feel very relaxed while sinking into the tub, babies don’t feel same. You can employ tickling to help your baby loosen up and feel more relaxed.

Play music

Music has a way of providing relief. However, the type of music you play matters. Babies respond differently to music. Some babies respond better to music with upbeats, while some feel relaxed at the sound of smooth and slow tunes.

You can start the music when it’s time to bath your baby, to set her in the right mood. In fact, you may make it a routine, to play music before bath time. Soon, she’ll know whenever she hears the tune; it means it is time for her to be bathed. This does not only inform her of the next activity but also prepares her mind.

Young adults often prefer to eat junk food and sugary snacks. As a parent, you must help your teen to make better food choices. Here are some ideas to help:

Protein

Protein is essential for the growth and development of your teen. Protein helps in repairing, building and maintaining the body tissues. Examples of foods that are rich in protein are beans, legumes, soy, quinoa, meats, fish, cheese, eggs, yogurt, wheat germ, peanut butter, almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pinto beans, shellfish, tofu, kidney beans etc.

Carbohydrates

This supplies energy to the body and this makes it an ideal source of energy for your teen. Some simple carbohydrates include fruits, milk, milk products, vegetables etc., while those of complex carbohydrate are starchy vegetables, cereals, legumes and whole grain food items.

Counting Calories

Calorie intake usually depends on how active your teen is. An average teenager who is really not active can consume meals with 2000 calories (male) and 1600 calories (female). An active teenager should eat 2800 calories (male) and 2200 calories (female). Do not encourage your children to count the calories themselves. You should make sure that your teen gets enough food each day on your own.

Iron

Iron supplies oxygen to the muscles. It also helps the brain to function properly, and develops the immune system for fighting diseases. Teenage girls require more iron than the boys do.

Some iron-enriched foods are green leafy vegetables, whole grain, meat and nuts.

Calcium

It is known to strengthen the bones and the teeth in the body, while the deficiency of calcium can cause osteoporosis in later stages of life.

Some calcium-enriched foods are dairy products, cereals, leafy vegetables.

Vitamins and Minerals

They increase your teen’s immune system and protect them from varieties of health conditions, such as anemia, night blindness, weakness etc.

Some excellent sources of vitamins and minerals include milk, cheese, liver, yogurt, eggs, carrots, sweet potatoes, peaches, papaya, and mangoes. Some other good sources are strawberries, guava, spinach, tuna, orange, egg yolks, salmon etc.

Driving with kids younger than 13 years old in the front seat is not safe even with a seat belt. Riders in the front seat are more at risk in the event of a Collison. For kids, this risk is even higher. Airbags can endanger smaller kids after inflation. If your child must stay in the front seat, ensure that the airbags are disabled. This is only recommended if the car doesn’t have rear seats.

Car safety tips

Different states have distinct laws on car safety, but a lot of them are identical. Some of these include:

  • Children under the age of thirteen must ride in the back seat.
  • Kids who are not up to 4’9” tall must use booster and safety seats.
  • The booster and safety seats must be suitable for the child’s weight and height. Always check the label for more details. Also, ensure that you read the instructions on the car seat.
  • Find a certified technician to install the car seat. It is better to find a qualified car seat technician to set it up. This way you will be sure that it is properly fitted.
  • Ensure that everyone in the car buckles up before driving. Don’t get tired of teaching people around you these rules. Also, you need to obey them so your kids can learn from your actions.

Packing your child’s lunchbox is sometimes healthier than letting the child buy snacks from the canteen. However, if it’s not possible to pack a lunchbox for your child, you can help the child to make healthier choices by following these steps.

Choosing healthy meals from the canteen

These ideas depend on what the canteen is serving. Some include:

Sandwiches, rolls/wraps

Encourage her to choose wholemeal, multigrain, or high fiber white sandwich. The filling should include lean chicken, salad, beef, eggs or fish.

Cold food

This option is also excellent for kids. Some examples include fresh salads, riper paper rolls, and sushi.

Hot food

Some of these meals include

  • Veggies and lentil hotpot
  • Fresh soup with bread rolls
  • Lasagna and pasta with fresh tomatoes
  • Chicken or beef curry, veggies with rice
  • Noodles or rice with lean meat and veggies

Snacks

Your child can also opt for healthy snacks from the canteen. Some include:

  • Whole fruit or fruit salad
  • Air popped popcorn
  • Low-fat yogurt
  • Veggie sticks with dip
  • Reduces fat cheese with wholemeal crackers or pita
  • Boiled eggs
  • Fruit bread or raisins

You can also pack tap water in a bottle for the child to drink. It is easily refillable all through the day. It is a lot cheaper and healthier than buying sugary drinks. If the child has to buy drinks from the canteen, then soy drinks are ideal.

Winter doesn’t mean that the family fun must be restricted to indoor activities. You can still enjoy outdoor activities and keep fit as a family. Here are some interesting ideas to try:

Tubing, sledding/coasting

Sliding downhill is fun for both adults and kids. You can set this up using toboggans, plastic snow disks, inner tubes or plastic bags. A local park or the neighborhood would be an ideal venue for this. However, you should dress appropriately in layers and wear thick boots.

Build snow forts/snowmen

You can plan a family snowman tournament to see who can create the best snowman. You can make it more interesting by creating other animals and not just snowmen.

Snowball fight

This game is always unplanned. It has just one rule: have fun. You can opt to create rules for the game to make it fun. Ensure that the kids don’t hide behind rocks. Players should not throw too hard or target faces. You can have fun while exercising as a family.

Skiing

Take your kids on a ski vacation to a resort. This option does not have to be expensive. You can plan to visit a local ski for one day. You can also opt to rent skis to really enjoy the experience. Some local parks set up a mini ski resort for people in the neighborhood.

Millenials are notorious for not knowing how to ‘adult’. Parents are becoming more and more concerned about their children being able to do everyday things. Here’s a list of life skills every child should know by the time they reach high school.

Meals And More

It’s really surprising that some adults don’t know how to cook even the most simple meals. Eating is essential to life, yet some people rely solely on other resources for food. Don’t let your child go through life thinking a Big Mac is the only way to keep from starving.

Knowing how to cook will reduce the risk of heart disease and other common health issues related to food. Not only that, you don’t want your child coming over for dinner every night once they’re in their 30’s.

Help Out With Everyday Life

Yes, academics and extra-curricular activities are important, but they aren’t real life. Every child should know what it’s like to do chores, have a job, or contribute to the family unit in some way. This prepares them for the real world and even later on when they have to take care of you.

Wakey Wakey

Every child should be taught to wake up on time by themselves. Wrangling them out of bed every morning isn’t doing them any favors. It sets them up for failure in the future; you can’t hold a job if you can’t get up for work on time.
