Homeschooling, like many other things, has its pros and cons. Have you been considering homeschooling for your child? This article will highlight various pros and cons of homeschooling.

You can choose the curriculum and set flexible teaching times

One of the key benefits of homeschooling is the right to choose the curriculum your child goes through. You also have the advantage of choosing when the study is to take place, and for how long it does.

Safety

In Public school system, there are common cases of bullying. Bullying has devastating results, which affects the sufferer physically and emotionally. In homeschooling, the student is protected.

Rise in productivity

It is estimated that in public school system, there’s one teacher for every 20 -30 teachers. Whereas, for the homeschooling system, it is one teacher to one student. This has shown improved productivity in the students who prefer homeschooling. In fact, study shows that students who school at home perform well on standardized tests, are successful in college, and as well succeed as adult employees.

Some cons of homeschooling include:

Poor social lives

Children under the public school system get to relate with numerous students every time they are in school. This develops their social lives. On the contrary, students enrolled in homeschooling are more introverted. As a result of staying indoors for long, they have fewer people to interact with. This affects their social lives in a negative way.

It is usually expensive

Unlike public schooling system, homeschooling is usually expensive.

Hands-on parenting

Even though children are loved by their parents, being with them for 24 hours/ 7 days could be stressful. This is so because, as a parent, you need to be with them all or almost all of the time. If being around your kid all of the time will be too stressful; you may have to reconsider your decision to homeschool.

For young kids, spelling can be a challenge. Though the words are easy, kids will need to go through words over and over. This will beef up their confidence and performance in class. Here are tips on how to help your child:

Use a different pattern

If you tell your child to sit and memorize the different vocabulary in his spelling list, he might find it boring. The spelling test is an avenue to help your kid acquire a good grade. It also will help him learn healthy studying habits. Kids feel really good when they get good grades, and this beefs up their confidence.

Start on time

When your child returns with the spelling list, you’ll need to access him. The reason is to identify words that prove difficult for him.

Having done that, more attention should be given to words that are proving difficult. However, you’ll need to mix them up with words he is good at, build his confidence.

Don’t wait until it’s late

Don’t leave the spelling training until the child has a spelling test. When you leave the studying until a day before the test, he might not have those words well memorized. This can sap his confidence, and may not produce the best result he should have gotten in his test.

Pay more attention to the trouble words

If you have discovered his trouble words, help him by making him repeat the letters of the spelling word. Have him write them out in a repeated form. For instance, if the word is “Please”, make him write on each line in this form “P, Pl, Ple, Plea, Pleas, and Please”.

Engaging in sports helps keeping you fit and healthy and this applies to kids as well. However, your kids will benefit a lot more when they participate in sports. Here are some of the benefits playing sports offers:

Social development

Teens grow socially when they play sports. When they spend time with their peers, they learn to come out of their shell and learn to interact better. Children may be self-conscious or shy, but when they meet other sports lovers, they may gain self-confidence.

Leadership Qualities

Sports help kids build leadership skills as well as team spirit. Kids learn to cooperate and coordinate with team members. They also learn to keep the team’s interest as a priority instead of pursuing individual goals.

Long-lasting friendships

The best friendships come from the sports field. Adults can attest to the fact that some of their best friends have been with them since childhood. Kids are bound to form lifelong friendships from the playground.

A role model

Many coaches and trainers act as role models for children. Kids need such respectable individuals in their life who they listen to. The coach often teaches kids about the role discipline plays in their life.

Stamina

Kids build stamina when they play sports. This goes a long way to increase the child’s strength and mental health.

Deciding about where your child schools can be quite difficult. This is because you want to make the right decision while keeping your child happy.

Factors to consider

If you want your child to attend a public school, think about what works for his/her personality, needs, strength, and interests. You should also consider the school’s culture and fit to determine if they fit with the values you want to instill in your child.

Personal preference

Would you prefer private or public education? Whatever you decide, bear in mind that the facilities should be considered as well. Some parents also prefer to send their kids to the schools they attended. If this is what you want, then you can arrange it.

You can also consider the level of religious education you want for your child. Do you want a boarding school or you prefer to see your child daily?

Practical considerations

You also need to consider other things such as the school’s location, cost, and difficulty of reaching the school as well as public transportation. If you also have other kids, do you want them to go to one school or do you have special preferences for each child?

Also, will your child require after-school care or lessons? This is an important factor when it comes to choosing a school.

Think about your first day in a new school. Was it pleasant? You were probably anxious all through. This is what happens when your child has to go to a new school. You can help them feel less anxious by following these steps:

Don’t dismiss fears

Children may be scared of starting over in a new school. They may worry about bullies, fitting in, tough classes and making friends. It is necessary to pay attention to such fears so you can address them with understanding and empathy.

Moving to a new school is a huge step for children. It may be minor to adults, but kids have to spend an entire day at school. Their lives revolve around the school and the people in it.

Speak to professionals

Therapists often recommend desensitization to help children cope with starting a new school. This process involves gradually exposing the children to what their afraid of and triggering a reduced emotional response. when kids have difficulty adjusting, this system may come in handy. It will help the child to feel more comfortable with this change.

The best way to do this is to visit the school with the child before school starts. It can be in the form of a tour. The principal or someone else can take you around. Be sure to visit the classrooms, library, playground, as well as the cafeteria.

You can also meet the child’s potential teacher and introduce them to each other.

It’s very important that you take preventive measures when the flu season starts if you want to help your kid not to get sick. These illnesses are the ones you must take care of the most as they are the most common illnesses that your kid can pick up in school.

Flu

This is one of the most common diseases and we kind of get used to it, but don’t underestimate it because the flu can be very dangerous if not treated right. Get your kid vaccinated on time and you will greatly reduce the risk of your child getting sick from an influenza virus.

Cold

Colds are also known as rhinoviruses, which are tiny infectious organisms that can live on surfaces for hours. These microorganisms tend to enter the lining of the nose and throat and then multiply and grow. Make sure your child washes its hands properly often.

Pink eye

Or conjunctivitis can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection or by allergies and pollutants such as smoke, chemicals in cosmetics. Remind your child not to touch its eyes with dirty hands as it can get this disease by touching someone who is already infected.

Kids develop at different paces, so there is no particular age or time for preschool readiness. Some kids are ready at eighteen months while others are old enough at three years old.

To determine if your child is ready to start preschool, consider these factors:

Basic self-care

Many preschools prefer kids that are toilet-trained. Kids who show some readiness to learn how to use the toilet are considered as well. Can your child wash his hands and dry them without supervision? Can the child sit quietly and eat a snack with needing help from an adult?

Focus

Can your toddler work unsupervised for a short period? The child must be able to complete a puzzle, draw, and focus without adult supervision. If you child lacks these skills, teach her at home to complete short tasks in your absence.

Group activities

Can your child take part in group activities? This skill is developed in preschool, but the child must be ready to learn it. Also, the child should also be comfortable with sitting in a circle and listening to the teacher. A great way to tell if your child is comfortable with group activities is to observe playgroups.

Independence

Can the child stay on his own in your absence for a few hours? Kids with babysitters have a better chance of starting preschool earlier. If your child cries a lot when you’re separated, then you should practice shorter separations first.

Sometimes, children may not want to go to school, and parents wonder what they can do about it. Handling this problem is easier if you find the root of the problem rather than force the child to go to school.

Possible reasons for refusal

  • Avoiding something that depresses him/her or makes him/her anxious
  • Avoiding public evaluation or social interactions.
  • To get attention from you or others
  • To watch TV or play games at home.

To determine the cause of the problem, speak to the schoolteacher or any other personnel. The teacher may have noticed something and will give you some clues to help solve the problem.

You can also go to a pediatrician. Emotional symptoms come with physical symptoms sometimes. You also need to confirm that the child is not suffering from depression or anxiety. If this is the case, you may need to see a counselor or psychologist to help.

Remember to stay calm. It may be difficult to deal with this situation because it may affect your routine as well. Don’t be agitated, stay calm until you find the cause of the problem and fix it. Let the child know that school is compulsory and don’t bribe the child because it doesn’t fix the problem.

When summer vacation here, kids rejoice and feel the need to use their free time to its maximum. This can lead to discipline problems and it’s very important that you set the things straight before they get out of control.

These are the possible ways to get your kids to know that the rules are rules, no matter which time of year it is.

Establish household rules

By creating household rules, you’ll stop the chaos that can happen during the summer vacation. Summer can be also a great time to update your existing rules based on your child’s needs and behavior.

Create a structure for your children

The structured schedule of the school day must be replaced with the structured schedule of the vacation days. Your kid can easily resort to misbehavior if its days are not well structured. A kid can get bored when having nothing to do during the day and that can be the direct cause of misbehavior.

Create a reward system

Reward systems can be very effective while addressing your child’s behavior problems. Identify your kid’s positive behavior and reward it for such a way of conduct.
