Here are some signs that show that your baby is taking enough milk:

  • Weight gain after three days
  • Less than ten percent weight loss in three days
  • Adequate stool and urine output

The stool and urine output is an excellent indicator because the baby must expel the waste products from the food she ate. Sometimes, however, a well-breastfed baby may not stool for days. This is completely normal too. It only becomes a cause for concern when it exceeds three days. Then you should see a doctor.

For a few days after birth, the newborn’s stools are usually black, thick and tarry. The first stool is known as meconium, and it changes within a few days to a mustard-colored loose and seedy stool. This color and texture remain the same until you introduce the child to solid foods.

A pediatrician can tell if your child isn’t eating well and recommend the best solution to the problem. You cannot determine if your child is getting enough milk by how much she sleeps or the breast’s fullness. Ensure that your little one nurses eight times per day.
