It’s good to have an open dialogue with your children about how they are using Instagram. Talk to them about what they’re seeing online. Get them to think before they post and ask themselves why they are sharing something with the world. Advise them to be conscious about whom they follow and suggest following those who can encourage their dreams and goals.

When you help your children to figure out how to use social media responsibly, they tend to begin filtering things themselves and making better choices. If you’re uncomfortable with what your child is posting online, remember you are still the parent and you have a right to intervene.

Instagram has a Private Profile feature. A private account allows children to choose followers and approve them. In the direct messages, there is a pending inbox so no message gets through without being approved first.

It is possible to enable safety features, such as comment filters, where you can block certain words you may not approve of.  You are also able to block and report any harassment or bullying.

Sometimes we avoid having tough conversations. [AD] Maybe it's because the topic is uncomfortable or scary or we just don't know how to talk about it. But if there is one thing I could suggest you talk to your kids about, it would be pornography, sexual abuse and how to keep your child safe from would be predators. • Consider these statistics: *The average age of first exposure to pornography is age 11. *1 in 7 youth have received a sexual solicitation. *Only 25% of the youth who experienced a sexual approach or solicitation told a parent. • These statistics scare the crap out of me. And as much as I want to protect my children from every bad thing and person in the world, I can't do it. There is no way I can be with each of them, every single minute, every day. • Today on the blog I'm talking about how to utilize an amazing app called @websafety to monitor and protect our children by providing boundaries and rules.
